I’ve realized that we teachers continually gaze to future. We create broad learning outcomes for students in our care and then artistically sculpt logical and detailed plans for every month, week and day. We become creators, molders, shapers, and potters who can visualize future beauty in each student as we come to know them.

You may not be a teacher, but do you need to plan and design too? No wonder it’s hard right now. We’re trying to figure everything out.

We wish we could plan for what tomorrow might bring. We feel a continual need to be making triple-contingency-plans for every possible overlapping scenario. Sometimes, we’ve had it. We just want to quit and want to cease planning at all. But now, when it comes to schooling decisions, we have no choice. What if we don’t think of everything? What if we make the wrong decision? What if we make a tragic mistake? We feel like it’s all on us.

Utterly exhausting.

Exhausted from it all, we know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture (Ps. 100:3 ESV). It’s time to sing and surrender to Him. God knows.

God Knows: We Need to Surrender to our Master Designer and Teacher

Have thine own way, Lord! Have thine own way!

Thou are the potter; I am the clay.

Mold me and make me after thy will,

While I am waiting, yielded and still.

Have Thine Own Way, Lord! Pollard, A., 1902

Thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine (Is. 43:1 ESV).

God knows. He designed us. God knows every detail. Even the hairs of your head are all numbered (Mt. 10:30 ESV). He knew us before He formed us in the womb (Jer. 1:5) and He knows our children and what is best for them. Jesus, our Savior and Lord, tenderly knows we need His special care today.

God knows. Fear not, you are mine. God knows your children.

Surrender to our Savior

I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep (John 10:14-15 ESV).

Have thine own way, Lord! Have thine own way!

Search me and try me, Master, today!

Whiter than snow, Lord, wash me just now,

As in thy presence, humbly I bow.

Have Thine Own Way, Lord! Pollard, A., 1902

Explore me, O God, and know the real me. Dig deeply and discover who I am. Put me to the test and watch how I handle the strain. Examine me to see if there is an evil bone in me, and guide me down Your path forever (Ps. 139:23-24 VOICE).

Have thine own way, Lord! Have thine own way!

Wounded and weary, help me, I pray!

Power, all power, surely is thine!

Touch me and heal me, Savior divine!

Have Thine Own Way, Lord! Pollard, A., 1902

Wrapped in His cleansing forgiveness, loving-kindness, and sanctifying grace, can we release it all into His actual care, His glorious power, and receive His healing peace and perfect plan?

Psalm 139. Search me and try my heart.

God Knows: We Need to Surrender into a Praise Interruption

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come (John 16:13 ESV).

It’s not all on us, is it? Beloved in Christ, we have our Helper dwelling within us. He is speaking, guiding, and directing us through His Word as we prayerfully read it, listen to His voice, and surrender. He knows exactly what we authentically need. Through His living and active Word, He discerns the thoughts and intentions of the heartpiercing (Heb. 4:12 ESV) and shaping us as our Potter (Is. 29:16, 64:8; Rom. 9:21). God knows and intimately guides us.

Our Lord is reaching into this teacher’s heart and helping me to see His treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us (2 Cor. 4:7 ESV). By His glorious work of gospel treasure, He has provided His overflowing grace, through His power. It will be OK because God knows, today and tomorrow.

God knows we need His power

We praise You for your unending grace, Father. Draw us near to You in surrender, listening to Your Word alone and praising You as all-sufficient each day.

Have thine own way, Lord! Have thine own way!

Hold o’er my being absolute sway!

Fill with thy Spirit till all shall see

Christ only, always, living in me!

Have Thine Own Way, Lord! Pollard, A., 1902
