On this holiest of weeks, I’m sharing my husband’s favorite “Easter hymn.” First thing on Resurrection Sunday, he cranks up the volume and plays it!
He arose! He arose!
Hallelujah! Christ arose!
(“Christ Arose,” Lowry, R., 1874)
Somehow, the truth that our beloved Savior is resurrected, risen, and reigning brings me such peace and joy amid my chronic suffering that has become a fellowship of Christ’s suffering.

Somehow, singing to our elder brother Christ Jesus helps me wait as I suffer. Somehow, tasting a tiny bit of His suffering has become a fellowship of His suffering…but also in the power of His resurrection. Somehow, it all has made me praise Him even more, longing to see Him face to face.
Maybe it’s because His suffering song of Psalm 22 is our powerfully-alive LORD’s song that He sang in His earthly life?
For He has not despised or detested the torment of the afflicted. He has not hidden His face from him, but has attended to his cry for help (Ps. 22:24 BSB).
And right now, one that He sings to our hurting hearts as a magnificent chorale with every suffering believer from across all history?
For both the One who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers (Heb. 12:11 BSB).
Jesus singing along with us, truly a fellowship of Christ’s suffering, but in His resurrection power?!
I will proclaim Your name to my brothers; I will praise You in the assembly (Ps. 22:22 BSB; Heb. 12:12 BSB).

Hallelujah, our elder brother Christ Jesus suffered in our place, so we could live with Him forever!
During the days of Jesus’ earthly life, He offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the One who could save Him from death, and He was heard because of His reverence (Heb. 5:7 BSB).

Low in the grave he lay–
Jesus, my Savior,
waiting the coming day–
Jesus, my Lord.
Waiting for Jesus, a fellowship of Christ’s suffering
We…groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies (Rom. 8:23 BSB).
After this I heard a sound like the roar of a great multitude in heaven, shouting: “Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God!” (Rev. 19:1 BSB).
Therefore the Lord longs to be gracious to you; therefore He rises to show you compassion, for the Lord is a just God. Blessed are all who wait for Him (Is. 30:18 BSB).
Hallelujah, our Savior Christ Jesus is the reigning LORD!
Vainly they watch his bed–
Jesus, my Savior;
vainly they seal the dead–
Jesus, my Lord.
Then the end will come, when He hands over the kingdom to God the Father after He has destroyed all dominion, authority, and power.
For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death (1 Cor. 15:24-26 BSB).
Death cannot keep his prey–
Jesus, my Savior;
he tore the bars away–
Jesus, my Lord.

Hallelujah, our victorious Savior gives us songs to praise our triune God in the fellowship of His suffering, a mighty triumph over our evil foe!
My praise for You resounds in the great assembly; I will fulfill my vows before those who fear You (Ps. 22:25 BSB).
Up from the grave he arose,
with a mighty triumph o’er his foes.

He arose a victor from the dark domain…
He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of His beloved Son (Col. 1:13 BSB)!
For you are all sons of the light and sons of the day; we do not belong to the night or to the darkness (1 Thess. 5:5 BSB)!
and he lives forever with his saints to reign!

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints (Ps. 115:16 BSB).
He arose! He arose!
Hallelujah! Christ arose!
I ask that out of the riches of His glory He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being,
so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. Then you, being rooted and grounded in love, will have power, together with all the saints,
to comprehend the length and width and height and depth of the love of Christ,
and to know this love that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God (Eph. 3:16-19 BSB).
A holy week playlist gift to sing within our fellowship of Christ’s suffering, in the power of His resurrection
This week’s playlist gift sings praise to our resurrected, risen, ascended, exalted Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. In our suffering, a fellowship of Christ’s suffering. For His suffering in our place. For His gift of the power of His resurrection, and therefore, sure hope in our resurrection to come. With solid hope in the day we will see Him face to face. With deepened love…from Him and for Him.
Sister in Christ, I know you’re suffering too. May these songs be our Savior’s gift of joy and peace amid your suffering as they are to me.
Sign up here if this would be His beautiful Easter gift to you, with my love and prayers alongside yours. And have a blessed Resurrection Day celebration, for we are both SO blessed in Christ. Yes, as we suffer…even because we’re suffering…
