I was afraid of what might happen. My tiny human mind couldn’t figure out how the situation could possibly resolve. Like the songwriters of the Psalms, I needed to battle today’s fears about the future. I needed to battle the enemy’s made-up lies by singing truths of God’s Word, as David models for us in Psalm 56.
I first considered logic. “What can man do to me?” (Ps. 56:11 ESV). What’s the worst that could happen? I might lose some of the comforts I now enjoy, things might get hard, I might even die from this.
Then, I remembered God’s past, gracious work in my life. Time and time again, this is what He has done!
For You have delivered my soul from death, my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of life (Ps. 56:13 ESV).
Ah yes. He has! My thoughts then filled with truths of the gospel of Jesus Christ!
What is the Lord doing for, in, and through us right now, as believers in Christ?
Let’s come to the Lord in a “praise interruption,” praising Him for what is true, as we interrupt anxious thoughts and battle fears together.
Sing Gospel-centered truths to battle fears
He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins (Col. 1:14 ESV).
That Word above all earthly powers,
no thanks to them, abideth!
(“A Mighty Fortress is Our God,” Luther, M., 1529)
Lord, today, because I am “in Christ,” I’m eternally alive with You. You are indeed “above all earthly powers” and You are with me (Jn. 1:1-5; Mt. 28:18-20). By Your amazing grace, I do walk with the all-powerful, reigning, and sovereign God. I no longer walk in darkness, but in the light of Your kingdom (Jn. 8:12). So You will give me all I need, for each day You’ve appointed for me (Ps. 139), by Your indwelling and abiding Spirit. You illuminate Your living and active Word to my heart (Heb. 4:12) and are continually transforming me to live according to Your Word, out of Your deep love for me in Christ (2 Cor. 3:16-18). No matter what happens in the next hour, day, or month, this is my hope and my blessed assurance. With humble gratitude, I praise You.
Sing of God’s kingdom plan for today
The Spirit and the gifts are ours
through Him who with us sideth.
“This I KNOW, that God is for me” (Ps. 56:9). Ruling and reigning Lord of all, You are on my side. How can I know this for sure? Because of Jesus. Because of the gospel. Because of His perfect life, death, and resurrection for those who believe, I am saved from Your righteous wrath on sin, now and forever (Rom. 6:22-23) and nothing will ever separate me from Your love (Rom. 8:31-39).
Because You put me here for Your kingdom purposes, because anything that happens is in Your currently reigning and sovereign hand, I can rest in Your kingdom plan (1 Cor. 15:25). Because I am Yours, I can endure any trouble that might happen to me personally (Rom. 8:35-37). You are on Your throne and Your kingdom plan is at work (Heb. 12:25-28). You are always faithful, my compassionate Father (Lam. 3:22-23), and You will give me grace for anything You want me to do (2 Cor. 9:8).
God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted [tested] beyond your ability, but with the temptation [testing] he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it (1 Cor. 10:13).
Sing of God’s kingdom plan for the future
Then comes the end, when [Jesus] hands over the kingdom to God the Father, after he has destroyed every ruler and every authority and power. For [Jesus] must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death (1 Cor. 15:24-26 ESV).
According to his promise, we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells (2 Pet. 3:13 ESV).
Let goods and kindred go,
this mortal life also;
the body they may kill:
God’s truth abideth still;
his kingdom is forever!
With humble gratitude, thank You, Father. In the name of our Lord of lords and King of kings, Jesus Christ, amen.

I am eternally alive with Jesus. No matter what lies ahead, the Lord knows ahead of time and will lead me. Why should I fear?
I might not be able to change my circumstances but I can change my attitude and perspective.
I’ve turned my whole life around and am finally happy with who I am and what I’ve become.
Hallelujah and I praise the God Who Sees (from my favorite song which I listen to daily to give me the strength to forge on).
Thank you for thought provoking post.
