We love the names of Jesus, don’t we? Christmas songs are filled with them, echoing God’s Word. They remind us of God’s unchanging character, on display in His incarnated person, God the Son.
This week, our playlist gift is sing-praying the names of Jesus, singing to Jesus by name in our suffering Christmas.
How my heart needs this right now, with ebbs and flows of physical pain and emotional ups and downs. God encourages us in our hurts and losses as we sing-pray who He is, for He gives us strength and calms our fears in the process. I need to see Jesus, to behold Him as I suffer.
So, let’s behold who Jesus is together as we “sing” a bit of Handel’s Messiah and Jesus’ names!
O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion, get thee up into the high mountain: O thou that tellest good tidings to Jerusalem, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God! (Is. 40:9, 60:1)
Jesus, Son of God, we behold You as God
Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a Son…
For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given, and the government shall be upon His shoulder (Is. 9:6).
[Jesus says], “I and the Father are one” (Jn. 10:30 ESV).
And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life (1 Jn. 5:20 ESV).
Jesus, Your name is Emmanuel
And shall call his name Emmanuel, God with us (Is. 7:14; Mt. 1:23).
If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you (Rom. 8:11 ESV).
Jesus, the glory of the Lord who has come
Arise, shine, for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee! (Is. 40:9, 60:1)
For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge
of the glory of God
in the face of Jesus Christ (2 Cor. 4:6 ESV).
Jesus, the glory of the Lord who has risen
For behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people; but the Lord shall rise upon thee, and His glory shall be seen upon thee, and the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising! (Is. 60:2-3)
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live (Jn. 11:25 ESV).
“Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades” (Rev. 1:17b-18 ESV).
Jesus, the shining light in this fallen world’s darkness
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it (Jn. 1:5 ESV)…
[Jesus said He came] to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God,
that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those
who are sanctified by faith in me (Acts 26:18 ESV).
The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; and they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined (Is. 9:2)…
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will HAVE the light of life” (Jn. 8:12 ESV, emphasis added)!
Jesus, Your name is wonderful!
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God (Jn. 1:12 ESV)!
Jesus, Your name is Counselor!
But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name (Jn. 20:31 ESV).
My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous (1 Jn. 2:1 ESV).
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you (Jn. 14:26 ESV).
Jesus, Your name is the mighty God!
“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end” (Rev. 22:13 ESV).
Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am” (Jn. 8:58 ESV).
Jesus, Your name is the everlasting Father!
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me” (Mt. 28:18 ESV).
But of the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom” (Heb. 1:8 ESV).
Jesus, Your name is the Prince of Peace!
I have said these things to you,
that in me
you may have peace.
In the world you will have tribulation.
But take heart; I have overcome the world (Jn. 16:33 ESV).
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith,
we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ (Rom. 5:1 ESV).
And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus (Phil. 4:7 ESV).
and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace (Is. 9:6)!
